    This early masterpiece by Jusepe de Ribera was created near the end of his stay in Rome. Ribera, one of the earliest and most gifted Caravaggisti, absorbed the bold naturalism of Caravaggio and developed it with his own dramatic clarity. In this powerful half-figure portrait, Saint James the Greater stands before a dark background illuminated by a concentrated beam of light. His pilgrim’s staff and the gleaming emblem on his robe identify him as the apostle and traveller. The brilliant red cloak, rendered with sculptural folds, enhances his presence with striking depth and dignity. The gentle inclination of his head contrasts with the strength of his figure and reveals an inward moment of grace.
