Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) was a Flemish painter and diplomat, and the leading exponent of Baroque painting in northern Europe. Based in Antwerp but active at many European courts, he created dynamic altarpieces, grand mythological and historical cycles, portraits, and landscapes. His art is marked by energetic composition, glowing color, and powerful, often exuberant figures that became a model for generations of painters.
