Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) was an Italian painter whose radical use of realism and stark chiaroscuro transformed Baroque art. Working in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily, he brought biblical scenes into the everyday world with ordinary models, dramatic light, and intense psychological presence. His style, often called tenebrism, influenced artists across Europe from Naples and Spain to the Low Countries.
