  • Title: Christ in Gethsemane
    Artist: Carl Heinrich Bloch
    Date: 1880
Collection: Sankt Hans Church, Odense, Denmark

Carl Bloch’s Christ in Gethsemane portrays one of the most profound moments in the Gospel. In the stillness of the garden, Christ kneels in prayer beneath the weight of the world’s sorrow. An angel descends beside Him, offering comfort as divine light breaks through the surrounding darkness.

The Saviour’s crimson robe recalls the suffering He would endure, His blood shed for the salvation of humankind. The soft beam of light that falls upon Him speaks of the Father’s presence, revealing that even in anguish, divine love is never absent.

This work is a reimagined version of Bloch’s earlier 1875 painting for the King’s Oratory at Frederiksborg Castle. It remains one of the artist’s most moving depictions of the Passion, uniting human suffering with the peace that comes from perfect surrender to the will of God.

    Spiritual Reflection

This painting invites us to enter the stillness of Christ’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Here we witness the depth of His love, a love willing to embrace suffering for the sake of our redemption. His humble surrender to the Father’s will reveals the perfect union of obedience and compassion.

In our own hours of trial, when we struggle to say “yes” to God, this image reminds us that the same light that shone upon Christ also reaches us. The peace of Gethsemane is found not in the absence of pain but in the nearness of the Father who never abandons His children.

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.” — Luke 22:42
