Mattia Preti’s Saint Veronica with the Veil is a moving Baroque masterpiece that captures one of the most tender legends of the Passion. The saint holds the veil upon which the Holy Face of Christ was miraculously imprinted as He carried the Cross to Calvary. In Preti’s rendering, Veronica’s expression is filled with reverent sorrow and love. The veil she holds glows softly, illuminated against the darkness that surrounds her, revealing the divine image of Christ through her act of compassion.
Painted around 1652, this work reflects Preti’s mastery of light and shadow, a style shaped by his years in Naples and his admiration for Caravaggio. The deep background and radiant highlights draw the viewer into a sacred moment where human mercy meets divine revelation.
