Italian Baroque painter from Calabria who worked in Rome, Naples, and Malta. Associated with the followers of Caravaggio, he used strong contrasts of light and shadow and robust, dramatic figures in his religious narratives. As a Knight of the Order of Saint John in Malta, he decorated churches with large frescoes and altarpieces that remain central to Maltese Baroque art.
