    Saint Thomas Aquinas was born around 1225 in Italy and became one of the greatest theologians of the Catholic Church. A Dominican friar, priest, and scholar, he devoted his life to teaching and preaching, producing the Summa Theologica, a monumental work that harmonised Christian doctrine with the philosophy of Aristotle. Renowned for his humility as well as his intellectual brilliance, he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1567 and is often called the Angelic Doctor, honoured for showing how faith and reason together lead the soul to God.

    Painted for the church of San Domenico in Ascoli Piceno, this panel is part of the Demidoff Altarpiece. Carlo Crivelli presents Saint Thomas Aquinas as a Dominican teacher and steadfast defender of the faith. The saint holds a carefully painted model of a church, designed in a style familiar to the friars who worshipped there. The building appears worn, with chipped stone and plants growing from the walls, suggesting a Church in need of renewal.
