    In this Baroque masterpiece, Philippe de Champaigne portrays Saint Augustine holding a flaming heart in his left hand and a quill in his right. He turns from his writing desk toward a radiant burst of golden light bearing the word Veritas (Truth), symbolizing divine revelation.

    Before him rests a lectern bearing an open Bible marked Biblia Sacra (Holy Bible), source of all truth. Beneath his foot lie the texts of Pelagius, Caelestius, and Julian of Eclanum—those who opposed his defence of divine grace. The entire scene glows with spiritual intensity, a vision of intellect and love united in contemplation of the eternal Word.
