Saint John the Evangelist, clothed in a brilliant red robe, bears the weight of his Lord. Mary Magdalene weeps in the background. Mary, the mother of James the Younger and Joseph, bows her head in sorrow. The Blessed Virgin Mary tenderly cradles her Son’s head and lifts her eyes heavenward in silent appeal.

    Christ’s wounds are unhidden. Blood flows from His pierced side and from the marks in His hands. Rubens contrasts the pallor of Christ’s lifeless body with the vitality of Saint John, deepening the emotional and theological weight of the scene. The stone slab suggests an altar, and the sheaf of wheat points to the mystery of the Eucharist, where bread becomes the Body offered for the life of the world.
