She rises upon the crescent moon, borne upward by clouds and angels, immersed in a golden light that suggests she is robed in the sun itself. Murillo eliminates most traditional symbols, allowing Mary’s purity and divine election to be expressed through movement, light, and serene surrender. The upward momentum of the composition fills the scene with joy and triumph, presenting Mary as wholly lifted by God’s grace.
