    Adam Elsheimer, the German master who worked in Rome and influenced painters such as Rembrandt and Rubens, created this exquisite altarpiece on small copper panels. Despite its intimate scale, the work displays remarkable richness and complexity. In the central scene the Cross of Christ rises in splendour, surrounded by saints, prophets and angels who glorify the mystery of salvation. To the right stand the patriarchs, including Moses, Abraham and King David, while Jonas sits upon the great fish and gazes upward toward the Cross. Saint Catherine and Mary Magdalene embrace in sisterly devotion. This masterpiece unites biblical history, devotion and the splendour of early Baroque artistry in a single unified vision.
