Adam Elsheimer (1578–1610) was a German painter from Frankfurt who worked mainly in Rome. He is best known for his small, meticulously detailed cabinet pictures on copper, in which he combined northern landscape tradition with dramatic lighting and poetic night skies. Although he died young, his inventive treatment of light and atmosphere deeply influenced contemporaries such as Rubens and later artists including Rembrandt.
