    Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, one of France’s most refined Neoclassical painters, created The Virgin Adoring the Host as a small devotional gift for a friend. In this serene composition, the Virgin Mary prays before the sacred Host, accompanied by two saints. To her left stands Saint Helena, holding the true cross of Christ discovered during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem. To her right, Saint Louis, King of France, wearing a blue robe adorned with golden fleurs-de-lis, symbols of faith and Marian devotion.

    At the centre, Mary is clothed in red and blue, colours that symbolize the humanity and divinity of her Son. Her hands are joined in prayer as her radiant face turns toward the altar. Her eyes rest upon the Host, glowing with divine light, in quiet adoration of the Eucharistic presence of Jesus.
