About the Artwork

Title: The Immaculate Conception
Artist: Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
Date: c. 1680
Collection: Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio

Painted around 1680, The Immaculate Conception by Spanish Baroque master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo stands among the most beloved representations of the Virgin’s purity and grace. The Blessed Virgin Mary appears clothed in luminous white and blue, her hands joined in prayer, her gaze lifted toward Heaven. She is borne aloft by cherubim and surrounded by radiant clouds that seem to part in reverence. Beneath her feet rests the crescent moon, a symbol drawn from the Book of Revelation: “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet.”

Murillo’s delicate brushwork and soft harmony of light give the composition a sense of serenity and divine radiance. His rendering of Mary is both celestial and tender, reflecting the perfect union of innocence and strength. Through this work, Murillo translates the mystery of the Immaculate Conception into a vision of pure grace,  showing a soul preserved from all stain of sin and completely open to God’s will.

Spiritual Reflection

This painting invites us to contemplate the mystery of Mary’s immaculate grace, revealed in the words of the Archangel Gabriel: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” Filled with divine favour from the first moment of her existence, she was prepared by God to become the pure dwelling place of His Son, a radiant reflection of the soul made perfect through grace.

“And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.’”
Luke 1:28
