  • Title: Saint Rose of Lima (Santa Rosa de Lima)
    Artist: Bartolome Esteban Murillo
    Date: c. 1670
Collection: Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Madrid, Spain

In this tender and luminous work, the Spanish master Bartolomé Estebán Murillo presents a moment of intimate grace between heaven and earth. Saint Rose of Lima, clothed in the humble habit of the Dominican Order, kneels in quiet devotion as the Christ Child appears before her.

Gazing upon Him in rapture, the saint encounters the Child seated upon a cushion atop her sewing basket. He raises His hands toward her, one in a gentle, caressing gesture, the other offering her roses. From His lips comes the inscription: “ROSA CORDIS MEI TV MIHI SPONSA ESTO”“Rose of my heart, you shall be my bride.”

At her side rest a book and scattered roses, signs of both contemplation and love. In the distance, a simple building suggests the convent, while in the foreground a rosebush quietly echoes her name and her sanctity.
