    Completed for the Vyd Chapel and inaugurated in 1432, this monumental altarpiece stands among the great achievements of European painting. Created by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, masters of the Flemish primitive tradition, the work consists of twenty panels, traditionally opened only on Sundays and feast days.

    At the centre is Christ the King, enthroned in serene majesty. Crowned and vested in rich red and gold, He raises His hand in blessing while holding a sceptre, sign of His eternal dominion. His steady gaze meets the viewer, inviting reverence and reflection. Radiating behind Him, a golden halo inscribed with sacred text evokes divine eternity, while the throne bears the solemn proclamation, “This is Almighty God in all His divine majesty.”
