William Holman Hunt

William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) was an English painter and a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London, he became known for religious and literary subjects executed with intense realism, vivid color, and meticulous attention to detail. Deeply committed to the moral and spiritual purpose of art, Hunt sought historical and symbolic accuracy, travelling repeatedly to the Holy Land to study landscapes, architecture, and customs firsthand. His sacred works are marked by rich symbolism, luminous surfaces, and a conviction that religious painting should unite visual truth with spiritual meaning, making him one of the most significant figures in nineteenth century British religious art.
