    Painted in the 1650s by the Italian Baroque master Sassoferrato, The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine portrays one of the most beloved devotional visions in Christian tradition. The painting was originally created as an altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria della Cima in Genzano, Italy.

    The scene illustrates an episode from the Golden Legend, in which the noble and learned Catherine of Alexandria receives a mystical vision after her baptism. The Virgin Mary presents the saint to the Christ Child, who places a ring upon her finger, symbolizing her spiritual union with Him. This sacred gesture expresses Catherine’s complete dedication to Christ as His bride.

    Sassoferrato’s composition is serene and contemplative. The gentle dignity of the Virgin, the tender gesture of the Christ Child, and the humble devotion of Saint Catherine form a harmonious vision of heavenly grace. At the saint’s side appear the instruments of her future martyrdom. The broken spiked wheel recalls the miracle in which the instrument of torture shattered, while the sword signifies the martyrdom she ultimately endured for the faith.
