    Originally created for Pope Pius V as part of the decoration of the newly built Torre Pio in the Vatican, this panel of Saint Mark once adorned the upper chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. Vasari had been commissioned to produce a grand cycle that included the four Evangelists and the Coronation of the Virgin. After the chapel complex was dismantled in the eighteenth century, the paintings were dispersed. The panel of Saint Mark eventually entered private collections before being gifted to the National Gallery of Art in 2012.

    Here, Vasari presents Saint Mark with his winged lion, the symbol of courage and royal dignity. The Evangelist leans forward with dramatic vitality as he writes his Gospel, his figure seemingly ready to step beyond the frame in the dynamic style inspired by Michelangelo’s Sibyls and Prophets in the Sistine Chapel.
