  • Title: John Henry Newman
    Artist: John Everett Millais
    Date: 1881
    Collection: National Portrait Gallery, London

Painted in 1881 by the distinguished English artist John Everett Millais, this portrait depicts Cardinal John Henry Newman, one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the nineteenth century. A leading figure of the Oxford Movement, Newman helped inspire a renewal of Christian tradition within the Church of England before his conversion into the Roman Catholic Church in 1845. He was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome in 1847 and created Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879.

Millais presents Newman with quiet authority and intellectual depth. Seated and clothed in the rich red of the cardinal’s habit, he appears contemplative and resolute, reflecting a life shaped by prayer, study, and fidelity to truth. The artist himself regarded this portrait as among his finest works and hoped it would stand as his enduring legacy.

Newman’s spiritual autobiography, Apologia pro Vita Sua, written in defence of his conversion, remains a cornerstone of Christian literature and a profound witness to the integrity of conscience. His life of faith and service was formally recognised by the Church when he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. He was canonised as a saint by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019. Most recently, Saint John Henry Newman was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIV on All Saints’ Day, 1 November 2025.

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.” — Saint John Henry Newman, Meditations and Devotions
