    Painted in 1601 for the Cerasi Chapel in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, Crucifixion of Saint Peter is one of Caravaggio’s most powerful and revolutionary works. The Apostle Peter, condemned to death, requested to be crucified upside down out of humility, considering himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ.

    Caravaggio captures the very moment the cross is being raised. Three executioners strain under its weight, their muscles tense, their bodies bent with effort. Their faces remain impersonal, absorbed in the labor. In striking contrast, Saint Peter, already nailed to the wood, endures in silence. His gaze is turned inward, detached from the brutality unfolding around him, as if already drawn toward the eternal.

    The stone in the foreground recalls the words of Christ in the Gospel of Saint Matthew:

    “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” — Matthew 16:18
