    Blessed Karl of Austria (1887–1922) was the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, renowned for his deep Catholic faith, devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart of Jesus. Married to Princess Zita of Bourbon Parma in a loving and exemplary union, he was the father of eight children and lived his vocation as husband, father, and ruler with fidelity and prayer.

    In 1916, in the midst of the First World War he became Emperor of Austria and was crowned King of Hungary. He strove for a fair and lasting peace, and promoted equity and justice. After the collapse of the empire, Charles was forced into exile, living in poverty and accepting suffering with profound trust in God. He died on April 1, 1922, in Madeira, calling upon the holy name of Jesus.

    Beatified by Saint John Paul II in 2004, he remains a model of Christian kingship, showing that holiness can flourish even amid loss, duty, and hardship.
