  • Title: Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Vision of Christ and God the Father at La Storta
    Artist: Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri)
    Date: c. 1612
Collection: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), California

Painted around 1612 by the Italian master Domenichino, Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Vision of Christ and God the Father at La Storta depicts a pivotal moment in the life of the future founder of the Society of Jesus. The painting commemorates an event that took place in November 1537 as Ignatius and his companions, Peter Fabro and Diego Laínez, were traveling from Paris to Rome.

Near the small village of La Storta, about ten miles northwest of Rome, Ignatius stopped to pray in a chapel built within the ruins of an ancient temple. During this prayer he received a remarkable vision. God the Father and Christ appeared before him, Christ bearing the Cross upon His shoulder. In the vision, God the Father asked Christ to accept Ignatius and his companions as His servants, and God spoke directly to the future saint with words of reassurance, promising that He would be favorable to him in Rome.

Domenichino portrays this sacred encounter with remarkable clarity and harmony. Ignatius kneels below in humble prayer while the heavenly vision unfolds above him among clouds and angels. Through expressive gestures and careful composition, the artist connects heaven and earth, guiding the viewer’s eye from the divine figures to the kneeling saint who receives his mission. The likeness of Ignatius follows established portraits derived from the saint’s death mask, lending a sense of historical authenticity to the scene.

This small altarpiece was originally commissioned by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese for the Cappellina Farnese, his private devotional chapel within the Casa Professa attached to the Jesuit church of Il Gesù in Rome. The painting formed part of a larger cycle celebrating the life and spiritual conversion of Saint Ignatius.

“Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. All that I have and possess You have given to me. To You, O Lord, I return it. Dispose of it according to Your will. Give me only Your love and Your grace, for this is enough for me.” — Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises
