Francisco de Zurbaran

Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish Baroque painter best known for intensely religious subjects, especially depictions of monks, nuns, and martyrs. His work is noted for dramatic light and shadow and deep devotional presence. Born in Fuente de Cantos, he spent much of his career in Seville and Madrid, shaping Spanish Golden Age art. Often regarded as the great painter of monastic life, his austere figures express silence, obedience, and interior prayer, making his work especially resonant with Catholic spirituality.
