    Painted around 1680 by Spanish Baroque artist Bartolomé Pérez, Our Lady of Good Counsel presents a rich devotional vision centred on one of the most beloved Marian titles in the Catholic tradition. The painting reflects a longstanding devotion to Mary as Mother of Good Counsel, a title known since the Middle Ages and cherished by many saints and popes.

    At the heart of the composition stands the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, enthroned within an ornate architectural setting filled with delicate decorative elements. Kneeling in reverence beside her are two great Jesuit saints. On her right is Saint Francis Xavier, the renowned missionary whose preaching carried the Gospel across Asia. On her left is Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the youthful Jesuit known for his purity of life and deep devotion. When this painting was created, Aloysius had been beatified but not yet canonized.

    Through their posture of prayer, the saints direct the viewer’s attention toward Mary and the Child Jesus, reminding the faithful that the wisdom and counsel we seek ultimately lead us to Christ.
