    Completed for the Vyd Chapel and inaugurated in 1432, this monumental altarpiece stands among the great achievements of European painting. Created by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, masters of the Flemish primitive tradition, the work consists of twenty panels, traditionally opened only on Sundays and feast days.

    In in this panel, Mary is shown reading from a girdle book draped with a green cloth. The book is a traditional attribute of the Virgin, reflecting her title Seat of Wisdom, for she bore Christ, the eternal Word. She wears an open crown adorned with flowers and stars and is clothed as a bride, expressing her purity and her intimate union with God. The four distinct flowers set within her crown are traditional Marian symbols, signifying purity, humility, love, and sorrow.

    Above her arched throne, the inscription proclaims, “She is more beautiful than the sun and above all the order of the stars. Compared to the light, she is found superior. For she is the radiance of eternal light and a spotless mirror of God.” This text is drawn directly from the Book of Wisdom.
