About the Artwork

Title: Ecce Homo
Artist: Bartolomé Estebán Murillo
Date: c. 1670
Collection: Private Collection

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo’s Ecce Homo captures one of the most solemn moments in the Passion of Christ. The Saviour stands before the crowd after the scourging, clothed in a red mantle, crowned with thorns, and holding a reed as a sceptre. The governor Pilate presents Him to the people with the words, “Behold, the man”.

In this intimate half-length portrayal, Murillo invites the viewer to gaze upon Christ’s wounded yet serene countenance. Soft light falls upon His face and shoulder, drawing attention to His eyes turned aside in quiet acceptance. The folds of the crimson robe and the gentle inclination of His head create a harmony of sorrow and majesty. Murillo’s subtle use of light and colour evokes both the humanity and divinity of the Redeemer, inviting contemplation of His silent endurance and love.

Spiritual Reflection

This painting invites the soul to behold Christ as He is shown to the world, wounded yet serene, humiliated yet glorified. His calm gaze teaches the beauty of surrender, the strength of gentleness, and the boundless mercy that flows from His sacred heart. As we look upon His silent endurance, we are called to recognise the depth of His love and to offer Him the compassion of our hearts.

“Once more Pilate went out and said to them, ‘Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.’ So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, ‘Behold, the man!’”
John 19:4–5
