  • Title: Assumption of the Virgin
    Artist: Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)
    Date: 1650
    Collection: Detroit Institute of Arts

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, painted The Assumption of the Virgin in 1650. As angels lift the Blessed Virgin toward Heaven, she turns her gaze and hand back toward the city of Rome, a gesture symbolizing her intercession and the living bond between heaven and earth, God and humanity.

Below her unfolds a panoramic view of Rome, featuring the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the Colosseum, the Capitoline Palace, the Pantheon, and the Church of Saint Ignatius.

    Spiritual Reflection

As Mary is lifted into glory, we are reminded that her Assumption is the fulfilment of God’s promise to raise up the faithful in His love. The Catechism teaches that she was “taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things” (CCC 966). In her, we see the destiny prepared for every heart that trusts completely in Christ.
